German avant-garde pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten will perform at VAS est in Shanghai on 23 September 2026, marking their only Mainland China headline show. Over more than four decades, the Berlin-based group have continually redefined the boundaries between sound, noise, and music, establishing themselves as one of the most influential forces in the history of industrial and experimental music.

Formed in West Berlin in 1980, Einstürzende Neubauten developed a radical musical language by incorporating unconventional sound sources including metal sheets, pipes, springs, chains, power tools, and construction materials into their performances. Their debut album, Kollaps, combined abrasive metallic percussion and noise with the distinctive vocals of Blixa Bargeld, establishing an uncompromising sonic identity that would go on to influence generations of industrial, noise, and experimental artists.

As their music evolved, Einstürzende Neubauten moved far beyond the extreme industrial noise of their early years. Albums including Tabula Rasa, Ende Neu, and Silence Is Sexy introduced greater use of space, melody, silence, and intricate sonic structures. Metal, machinery, and custom-built instruments remained fundamental to their work, but became increasingly refined as musical materials, complemented by Bargeld’s singular vocal approach spanning song, spoken word, poetry, and theatrical performance.

In 2024, the band released their latest album, Rampen – apm: alien pop music, transforming the improvised “Rampen” sections developed during their live performances into a new studio work. Built around the concept of “alien pop music,” the album represents another evolution in the band’s continually expanding musical language. Their upcoming Shanghai performance offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the uncompromising sound, physicality, and experimentation of one of avant-garde music’s most enduring and innovative groups.
